Energy project competition in secondary schools in Figueres

The municipality of Figueres (Spain) organised an energy project competition aimed to the secondary schools of the town.

The objective of this competition was to give the students the opportunity to imagine what the city of Figueres will look like in terms of energy in 2050. It included different aspects such as energy savings, energy efficiency, production and distribution of energy, sustainable mobility, citizen awareness, energy efficiency in buildings, etc. The students were free to use the format they considered most suitable to express their vision of the city of the future. Some of them used wooden models, others used videos, maps or even webpages.

Thirteen projects involving 53 students and 8 teachers were presented. The jury acknowledged the creativity of the participants, the originality of some proposals (such as the production of energy while people are doing sport) and the commitment of all the projects for a new energy scenario at local level. This competition showed that the concepts of energy efficiency, renewable energy and the link between energy and climate change are very well understood by secondary students. It also emphasized that a radical change is needed in the relationship between energy and the territory.

Six awards and 13 special mentions were awarded during a public event that took place on 20 May 2014 in the Town Hall, with the presence of the Mayoress of Figueres and the Councillor in charge of Environment and Youth.
